Artist Information
An Interview with Fantasy Record Label Artist Linda Rankin LINDA RANKIN: They listened to basically jazz. I have three other sisters, one older and two younger. They played Dave Brubeck all of the time and Miles Davis. I took guitar lessons when I was in the third grade. Teachers came to my home, but I was never in a group. I always just played for my self. I like to spend time making music for my own enjoyment. I still use a cassette recorder, and I make inspirational tapes and listen to them at night. I have a collection of them. LINDA RANKIN on meeting Carmen Jackson: I needed a vocalist in a hurry. and her manager, Stephanie and I have been friends for years. Stephanie said she could get Carmen Jackson to sing the chorus. I have worked for lots of local magazine writing articles. One of our printers worked with Stephanie and I would visit the printer and I met Stephanie at his print shop. I am the editing manager of The Urban Theater Magazine. David Rambeau is the founder and publisher. I don’t act, but I have the assignment to cover local gospel plays in the Detroit area. LINDA RANKIN on the creation of the song Jesus Saved My Soul: God is my inspiration and He gives me the poems that I have. Those words are his and it is almost like I am taking dictation for the poems, lyrics and the short stories. JESUS SAVED MY SOUL was written back in the mid eighties. [The work seems so fresh.] I do have over six hundred poems, so I always pray about it and that was the one that I felt in my spirit was the one to use. I have never performed that one before. I may have been on a Friday night poetry show on the radio and may have read it but I don’t recall. LINDA RANKIN on Darell Red Campbell: I was searching for someone that I could hum the melody to and David Red Campbell could play the melody as I presented it to him. A coworker at work, Betty, introduced Campbell to me. I hummed the song to him and he played it, and he did a great job. I sang the song and he did a god job. He was able to pick up the melody. [First album project.] Since I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in September of last year. I woke up one day and I couldn’t walk. I ended up receiving an overdose of pregnezon. I ended up in a coma for four day. My primary doctor said that in his forty years of practice he has known anyone to recover from meningitis, both viral and bacterial, compounded by encephalitis. So these are personal obstacles but I consider it a miracle from God that I am still living. So recovery from that infection will take a couple of years for me to actually get back to full functioning. So I am dealing with that along with the full effects of MS. But I am not going to give into any of these setbacks. It was something that I have always known that I should be doing. There were angels that aligned both sides of my bed. The Lord gives everybody gifts and talents and we are supposed to use those gifts. I have a responsibility to get the message out. I have to do that. because that is the gift and talent that the Lord gave me and I am supposed to use it. LINDA RANKIN on meeting Roxanna Gordy Wright. I went to grade school with one of her brothers. and my older sister went to grade school with Roxanna, and we have always known the families. She has been an inspiration with writing, and with her background in the music industry she has an understanding of the creative process and has been very supportive. We have worked on many poetry projects that I have hosted around the city of Detroit and different venues and art galleries. Roxanna is very knowledgable in her field as a music publisher and she has taught me valuable information. More than that she is a very spiritual person and she encourages me to not ever give up no matter what the obstacles are. She understands that creatvity is a blessing from the creator to be shared with everyone LINDA RANKIN on meeting George Hicks. How I met George Hicks. I met George Hicks through David Rambeau and Hick’s animation studio. There was a fortieth anniversary party celebrating Rambeau’s ongoiing career on television in the Detroit market, and I wrote a commemorative poem for David. The Day I wrote that poem, the very next day I went in the hospital and was in a coma.
