Artist Information
Brick City, New Jerusalem better know as Newark, New Jersey was once home of the 1967 Newark riots, the infamous Club Sensations, the Zanzibar, Twin City Skating Rink, Downtown Newarks Broad and Market (the hot spot for the latest fashion, underground music, among other things). It is also the birthplace to some of hip-hop's biggest names such as Redman, The Fugees, Queen Latifah, among others. While everyone was getting their party on in the early 80s and 90s up in Da Bricks, Newark was busy raising one of the fiercest, lyrically gifted MCs to bless the mic. With his uncanny lyrics, clever metaphors and sharp delivery, Young Gift is definitely a contender for the top spot in Hip-Hop. Born Nadir P. September 9, 1981 in Newark, NJ, Young Gift has seen and been through it all. The middle child out of 8 siblings (one brother and seven sisters), Gift experienced his biggest loss at age 9. In one of the toughest songs ever written, Diamond in the Rough, Gift spits "when I was young/God took away my mother/I was mad." With the loss of his mother, Gift decided at a young age that he was going to make something of his life. Going back and forth from Newark to Virginia between 92-93, Gift wanted to get a break from the norm in Da Bricks and decided to move to Virginia. When asked why he would move to Virginia at such a young age, Gift stated, "it was just a lot of sellin drugs, stolen cars, just a lotta bad shit. Thats why I moved to V.A. but I had to come back cause whats the bricks without Young Gift!" "I'm from a hood in the Bricks/and a hood in the Wick" -Young Gift At age 15, Young Gift was back in Newark. "Running the streets of Newark and Elizabeth, NJ was the norm. My moms passed when I was very young and my Hood Family (Brim) accepted me. I'm from 11th St. & 12th Ave in Newark and I bang for Reid St., E. Grand, Catherine, P.M. and Jefferson Park." At age sixteen, Gift decided to put the pen to pad. "I been rapping for about 8 years now. My first album was with a group called 7:30. I made up the name Young Gift cause I was young at the time. It started out with Lil Gift, everybody kept telling me I was gifted so I ran with Young Gift." The 24-year-old proud father of two handsome boys (Nadir and Izayah) says that his inspiration to rap came from his first son. "I rap/cause Iraq is a whole different field" -Young Gift Looking for a different outlook on life, Gift served his country in 2000. "Being in the Army, experiencing different parts of the world and how fucked up it was makes me appreciate everything at home in the USA everything including rap." After his stay in the army, Gift decided once again to come back to Da Bricks and Da Wick. His love for his hood became even stronger and his passion to rap increased by what he faced. (daily life) "Hip-Hop was built on honesty and integrity" -Russell Simmons hip-hop mogul If you see Young Gift in the streets, you're just about guaranteed to see Tommy G. Some may ask, Who's Tommy G? To Gift, that question is a no brainier. "Tommy G is not only my manager, but my other half (NO HOMO). He is highly important to the Young Gift Movement cause he is the Young Gift movement, I've know him for two years but it seems like forever." When asked about the Young Gift movement, Tommy says, "Theres not a lot of available jobs in this business, but Gift got something that a lot of other rappers don't." ( and then he refuses to explain for now ) With a good manager and a strong team behind him, Young Gift is certain to succeed. After a short stay at a few indie labels, Gift is now doing his own. On My Grind Entertainment represents everything that Gift has worked hard for. With his first truly independent project scheduled to release soon (On My Grind the mixtape vol. 2), Gift is still heavy in the streets with Vol. 1. With hood classics like What's Hood and Eye for a Eye feat. Paul Cain (SLK/SF), the summer banger Suelo feat. Big O and The club hit I Cant Wait feat. Money Malc. (M3Z Ent.), off of On My Grind the mixtape, Gift plans to take the industry by storm. The Streets are in love with Young Gift from Jersey all the way across seas in Mo-Bay Jamaica. "I do everything Im doing for my fans. Im a real nigga and a people person," says Young Gift about all the love he gets from the streets. "A wise man once told me Ill rest when Im dead... so thats what umma do.." -Jay-Z After opening for big acts like Mobb Deep, 50 Cent, Nore, Nappy Roots, Field Mobb, and the Ying Yang twins, Young Gift says his biggest event to date was "when me and my nigga Money Malc killed it for like 2,000 people at Club Deep." When asked what makes him such a humble person, Gift simple states, "I don't take nothin for granted cause it can all be over tomorrow, so I just stay humble!"
