Artist Information
"TIP OF THE ICEBERG" Born in April 1979(27) Big Dave lived all over Australia and even a couple of years in London,England before moving to Canberra in 1993. It was here he discovered rap music and hip hop culture stumbling across a copy of Ice Cubes the predator he began to aquire as much of a hip hop cd collection as he could which wasnt always easy back then you had to order most rap releases into the country. You could say he had a turbulent childhood having a violent lunatic father who kidnapped him and his younger sister when he was 9 and proceded to "Go on the run" with them for over three years but once he was out of the picture David was 13 and it had only built a stronger character trait survival in him which he has retained to this day. He is the middle child of three having an older and a younger sister. His mother and him are close. Although he was in constant trouble with school teachers and the law groing up he always showed his mother the proper respect. After living with his family in Canberra for two years Davids mother had to return to her hometown but Big Dave remained in Canberra to continue at school and stay close to the crew he had in Canberra having moved around most of his life Bd was happy to stay put for once and leased a unit of his own with a friend of a friend. He realised early on that at 16 and only recieving austudy payments it wasnt going to be easy. After a couple of months things became even more expensive when Bd and one of his mates(andrew) had a confrontation with Bds flatmate which led to the flat mate moving after having his bedroom torched and belongings burnt by Andrew, the confrontation spilt outside where Andrew dislocated his shoulder and several other guys bit the dust. After the action subsided the bills doubled. To make matters worse Bds girl of the time had been spotted in the car of a local group of lads not taking this lightly Bd proceded to get drunk and head to school to find out the details when he arrived to find the group of lads in question he decided that action speaks louder than words approaching the group and hitting the main suspect. The lads crew immediatly set upon Bd who in hindsight should have brought some of his mates luckily he had brought a blade with him for emergencys and once surrounded expsosed it a swiped at the main suspect sending the group running like bitches, offcourse the police arrived shortly after arresting Bd and escorting him off the school grounds, once he had been expelled. Not letting this dampen his spirits he turned full time weed dealer and proceeded to party. At 17 he was evicted from his flat and went to spend some time with his family in Wollongong. Having partied all his money away Bd got a job labouring paying a meager 5 dollars 50 an hour just enough for weed and bills. After a year slaving away and getting no where he decided to return to Canberra where it seemed money was much easier to come by. He had saved a small amount which he spent buying a mobile phone, beaten up ford telstar and an ounce of fine coastal skunk. After qiutting his job he packed up the car and headed back to Canberra as usual on his shady missions Andrew was along for the ride. Arriving in Canberra he had one of his outrages ideas to print business cards up to promote his product. He then to Andrews amazement printed 500 and gave them out at local malls and colleges within hours he had enough money for an apartment in Pearce which was a suburb in the Act very close to where he grew up and just around the corner from his best mate to this day Kerry aka KD. After several months off hectic bussiness Bd was raided by police and arrested for possesion and supply of trafficable amounts of cannabis he was charged and released. Fortunately the police had not located the money and Bd was back in business within hours although it did creat the hassle of an immediate phone number change/flat change/car change he decided then and there to do that every six months to help evade the law. One of the arresting officers a young constable David Grant seemed to think he was Sherlock Holmes and kept a close eye on young Bd but never got lucky enough to nab him again. For the next few years it was money drugs woman and partying and if you were a club head in Canberra from 98-02 no doubt you saw him and the boys tearin up the club scene. He could no longer run his weed thing single handedly so he brought in a mate who we will call ed. During the whole time his love of rap never died his ill gotten wealth had allowed him to put together the greatest rap cd collection you could ask for. Still not taking his rapping seriuosly Bd had a brief stint trying to put something down one of his crew was a well known local dj,dj pafmack they mixed up a couple of traks but Bd was yet to find his natural style listening to alot of tupac, easy e,ice cube and many other american rappers he couldnt quite get a real aussie style down at this point but it would come. At this point Bd got greedy and seperated from Ed uping the anty and making obscene amounts off cash and starting his first relationship with what turned out to be a gold digging hoe(Bridget Murphy). In 1999 Bd and three of his mates two we will leave unnamed the third Tony Petrovic has passed on rest in peace and god bless made a fateful desicion to remove a business rival from the scene to keep it brief they were caught leaving the premises with weapons, two way radios, gloves aswell as items from the dealers apartment namely cash, drugs and jewlery. They were arrested and charged with armed robbery and assault.Australian federal police refused bail but some steller legal work by Tim Sharman and Craig Everson had Bd back in business the following day. They managed to keep Bd on bail until November 2002 due to aborted trials and a back logged supreme court. It did have its downfalls though as they had been plastered all over the Canberra times and local tv news. After bringing in the new millenium in style Bd was again raided by police in feb 2000 although the incompetence of the afp was apparent to Bd and his crew by the fact that they failed to locate 5 pounds of Cannabis and substantial sums of cash, they did manage to find a couple off ounces of weed a bag of ectstacy and some speed in Bds weekend pack. Somehow even with the impending armed robbery charge Tim Sharman managed to get Bd back on the streets and business returned to normal after the customery house/car/number change. A few months later and with Mr Sharmans help he recieved a 12 month suspended jail sentence,2 yr good behaviour bond and 160 hrs community service but the main thing was he was still free. In late 2001 after another close call with the law Bd enlisted the help of a runner to keep the heat of him retreating to Ngunnawal Act to lay low while he awaited what was the third and final trial. His brushes with the afp were far from over when in early 02 due to the golddigger girlfriend inability to blend into the background and lay low two afp detectives relieved Bd of 2 pounds of weed, cash and a small amount of party drugs although Bd was not charged he could not believe he had been ripped of by the afp. Although the money was there the stress off probable jail time and hs high matinence girlfriend had Bd stayin high all the time just to maintain. In one last show defiance in his final six months before the trial Bd moved as much weed as he could and braced himself for the trial. On the Monday 24th november 2002 Bd and co-offenders arrived at the supreme court Act to face the final trial anything but a verdict of not guilty and bd new he was doing time because of his record. He still had solicitor Tim Sharman and Barrister Craig Everson on his side and they were telling him with a jury it was fifty fifty he could walk.. They also offered to set it up so that Bd could testify against the others but that offended him to no end and he remained silent throughout the trial. After five days in court the trial convened until Monday giving the boys one last weekend if things went sour. Nice resturaunts n plenty of drugs later it was verdict time at court as per usual Bd just made it in time as he had to stop for smokes along the way. We still laugh about the 3rd day of trial when Bd was 25 mins late back from lunch as he had to stop to smoke weed with some of the boys,it nearly had him locked up before the trial even finished but that was him he took chances and always came up trumps!! So we were all confident hed beat this charge. Not to mention the 42,000 dollars in legal representation. As soon as the jury entered the room it was obvious the verdict was guilty and Bd was locked up,3 months later he returned to be sentenced and recieved 5 yrs. Upon arriving in prison Bd turned to music more than ever he had 5 cds inside to begin with 2pac all eyez on me discs 1,2,Eminem the eminem show,Eazy E 187s the killer and scarfaces greatest hits. He also met two rappers who would get him back into creating his own music Bt and Doug Weldon aka DougE. They would have cyphas while doing the dishes and walk the yard coming up with lyrics. The thing was, inside they had no idea the Aussie scene was set to explode. On a personal side his family and some friends had stuck staunch during his stay inside and he would like to thank those who supported him by writing letters. However his girlfriend really showed her true colours spending his savings and selling not only her car that he bought her but his aswell a nice nissan maxima and then proceeded to sell his belongings to fund an endless party. What she couldnt sell she left at his apartment where she had failed to pay the bills. She did beg him to move in with her upon release but he turned her down. Two years in Goulburn jail X-wing and another six months at parramatta,LongBay and Junee Bd recieved parole and was set to get into rapping for real. First came six months of partying funded by his former runner that he had left incharge of things, the former partner had pretty much run the business into the ground only making enough for the two of them to party and live well. Unfortunately for Bd he had been banned from Canberra until he finishs parole in Nov 2007 so he resides in Wollongong but will be returning home then. During his party fase he was lucky enough to meet a beautiful woman by the name of Stacey Mitchell the two hit it off immediatly and have been living together ever since. He couldnt ask for more support. Id say they will definantly marry. He was caught at a drug raid(no charges) in the Act whilst on parole and was nearly thrown back inside as hed already tested positive to cannabis since getting out. Once the party phase was over Bd entered a few local emcee battles doing well and getting madd props. Everytime you would go to visit him hed have some beat up full ball on the stereo and hed be freestyling. In this years first Australian scribblejam emcee battles he made the final 16 in the Nsw heats and got to perform in front of a couple hundred people in Sydney. Due to being forced away from Canberra his access to nice beats was not great so in late may this year he began creating his own beats and i have got to say they are better quality than some actual producers in my opinion. His upcoming project..Big Dave presents:the international mixtape is dropping Sept 30 2006 and from the stuff him and dj PafMack have shown me its nothing like whats around at the moment they have found there own style and it is sic believe me. With collaborations with hot talent from London to New York i think theres fifteen other rappers plus producers rnb singers alota Canberra talent and other aussies. As for the weed biz his so called mate shafted him but the heads in Canberra know whats up.Peep verse 2 of the Big Dave track "Modern Day Gladiators" Anyway to end the story so far through alot of trials and tribulations something like a soap opera this cat is still standing what you have read here is just the tip of the iceberg. My man Bd plans on takin his story to Australia and the world....Maddly spat...over sic ass beats...Big Dave the raw hardcore Aussie rhymes................................ Dj little stoke for Big Dave..........Peace. Image Hosting by PictureTrail.com Time to update the bio. Since the rest of the bio was written 6 months has passed and things have been like a snowball gathering momentum every day. Big Dave's mixtape was released on September 30th 2006 through myspace and a handful of cd outlets and was on sale for just over two months before the 350 copies were sold out. All without a label and with very little financial support. It shows what can be done with drive, ambition and a heap of hard work. Due to the mixtape Big Dave was interviewed by 3dworld/homebase magazine for an article titled "Flag bearer" aswell as featuring on various internet sites and a mention on 96.1 The Edge. The track "Raw subject matter" from the mixtape enjoyed daily rotation on hardcorejamz.com an American hardcore rap station with over 25,000 listeners a day. Hardcorejamz also recently featured Bd on its list of movers and shakers and began playing another of his tracks "Street politiks" on a daily basis. As I said things just snowballed as MGM in Sydney decided to distribute Bd's stuff in 2007 giving him the chance to get his music nationwide. As the distribution deal came about Bd and the boys decided to form a label specialising in real street level hip hop and so "Koky prik rekordz" was born with its first release to be Bd's solo album early to mid 07. The first song produced under the new label was "Street politiks" and to celebrate a low budget film clip was made and is available to watch here at the myspace page. Not content to just make music the whole KPR fam has plans in place for a youth hip hop workshop set up through youth justice in Canberra to help keep the young guys out of prison and give them something worth doing. On top of this the KPR fam are negotiating with corrective services concerning programs for adult parolees on release to help them get back into society. During the last six months Big Dave has also recieved alot of support along the way and big thanks go to Cass from 3dworld magazine, Lee and Marie Clare from moob.com, Shrekk from Nurcha records,Hardcorejamz.com,Kt from ozhiphop.com, Anecdote, The Tongue, Jak n Torch everyone that purchased the mixtape, The whole KPR crew and everyone else that had his back, these people know who they are!!!! With the turn of the new year we decided to celebrate the launch of the new label and on January 6th at the Portofino lounge in Wollongong we brought the label in in style. The night was hosted by Shrekk from Nurcha records and featured performances by Anecdote, Hujak N Torcha, Double n Big Lu and of course Big Dave tore up a dope set. Ofcourse it wouldnt be a koky prik party without a bit of action. We ran a battle and were up to the final between Anecdote and The Tongue (CLASSIC!) when we were kicked out of the venue so the final was a battle out on the street which turned out to be a draw, one of the best battles Ive ever seen. And so that brings us to the last couple weeks and it dont stop. Bd is currently working on his debut solo album with producer Fady Atalla from hip hop tv. Fady is a top producer and we think his beats will compliment the raw Bd style. So it was a massive 06 and looks to be a bigger 07. Props on all the iah you did so far Dave, if I forgot anything my bad but its alotta stuff to remember in 6 months! Stay tuned people, ITS ON NOW!!!! Little Stoke...peace.
