Sly and the Family Stone Prep 'Live at the Fillmore East' Set

Sly and the Family Stone will release a new four-disc set documenting their two-night, four-concert stand at New York City's iconic Fillmore East in 1968. Live at the Fillmore East October 4th & 5th, 1968 is available to pre-order now, and will see release on July 17th via Epic/Legacy.

The Fillmore shows were recorded towards the end of a busy year for Sly and the Family Stone, during which they released both Dance to the Music and Life. Their label, Epic, planned to release a live LP featuring selections from all four shows, but ultimately shelved the project when the band scored a Top 10 hit with "Everyday People" off their seminal 1969 LP, Stand!

Live at the Fillmore East includes all four sets from those two nights in their entirety. And though there is some overlap, the compilation marks the first official release to primarily highlight Sly and the Family Stone's live show.

A special double LP vinyl edition of Live at the Fillmore East will be available at independent retailers on Record Store Day, April 18th. That "best-of" collection will feature highlights from all four shows as chosen by Roots guitarist "Captain" Kirk Douglas.

"This performance is living breathing evidence of how much of a force of nature Sly & the Family Stone were at this point of their career," Douglas said in a statement. "Every member of the group shines in a way that I can only describe as a revelation. It was enjoyable listening to the band break free from the studio arrangements of the songs we know and love to find new interpretations. And to think they did this twice in one evening!"
